Olivier Messiaen was een van de belangrijkste componisten van de 20ste eeuw. Hij was pedagoog en organist, maar ook… ornitholoog (vogelkenner)! Hij zag muziek met kleuren (synaesthesie) die zijn composities beïnvloedden. Zijn muziek is complex en vernieuwend, hij werd beïnvloed door Aziatische muziek, geïnspireerd door de natuur en door spirituele en religieuze verhalen, maar ook noteerde hij echte vogelzang en -geluiden. Onder zijn leerlingen waren twee van de belangrijkste avant-garde componisten Boulez en Stockhausen.
De internationaal gerenommeerde pianist Daan Vandewalle komt naar Antwerpen om samen met de prijswinnende pianisten Emma Vasilyan en Tal Walker in het Maagdenhuis enkele van Messiaen’s beste pianostukken op te voeren. Dit gevarieerde pianorecital omvat Messiaen’s Preludes, Vingt Regards sur l’enfant-Jésus en Catalogue d’oiseaux. Messiaen’s verhaal, inspiratie en innovatief gebruik van kleuren, ideeën over tijd en muziek en zijn vogelgezang worden door Sam Verlinden verteld.

In our first concert in more than a year, Monsieur Croche brings out the spiritual music of Olivier Messiaen. Olivier Messiaen was one of the major composers of the 20th century. He was a pedagog an organist, but also… an ornithologist (an expert on birds)! He saw music with colours (synaesthesia) which influenced his compositions. His music is complex and innovative, he was influenced by Asian music, inspired by nature and by spiritual and religious stories but also notated real bird songs and sounds. Among his pupils were two of the most important avant-garde composers Boulez and Stockhausen.
Internationally renowned pianist, Daan Vandewalle, is coming to Antwerp to perform at the Maagdenhuis together with prize winning pianists Emma Vasilyan and Tal Walker some of Messiaen’s best piano pieces. This divers piano recital will include Messiaen’s Preludes, Vingt Regards sur l’enfant-Jésus and Catalogue d’oiseaux. Messiaen’s story, inspirations and innovative use of colours, ideas of time and music and his bird songs will be narrated by Sam Verlinden.
